What is a metadata viewer?
Most files carry more than what you see or hear when you open them. A metadata viewer reads that embedded information and displays it in a readable form, instead of leaving it hidden inside the file's raw bytes. It's a purely inspection tool — it shows you what's there without changing the file.
What you can check
Depending on the file type, a metadata viewer can surface things like capture or creation date, the device or software that produced the file, author or copyright information, and — for photos — GPS location. What is actually present varies from file to file; a good viewer only shows fields it genuinely detected, not a fixed template.
Where to start
