Built from a real need.
Digital Metadata Remover didn't start as a business plan. It started while we were building other tools for working with photos, and kept running into the same problem.
Two other image tools, first.
HEIC Digital
Our first image-format tool, built to work with HEIC and HEIF — the format most modern iPhones save photos in by default.
AVIF Tools
Next came AVIF Tools, focused on the AVIF format increasingly used across the web for its compression.
Digital Metadata Remover
Working closely with image files for both projects, we kept encountering the same recurring issue: photos carry a lot more embedded data than most people realize.
The image you see is not necessarily all the data contained in the file.
EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata can carry the device that took the photo, the exact date and time, and — if location services were on — the GPS coordinates of where it was captured. None of it is visible when you look at the image itself.
We needed a simple way to remove image metadata at scale.
So we built one.
Not a niche script buried in one of our other tools — a dedicated one, built to inspect a photo's metadata clearly and strip it reliably, across the formats we already knew well from HEIC Digital and AVIF Tools.
Because the problem wasn't only ours.
Once we'd built the tool to solve our own need, it was clear the underlying problem isn't specific to us. Anyone who shares photos — online, with a client, with a stranger — might want to know what information a file carries, and in some cases remove it before sending it on.
So we decided to make Digital Metadata Remover available to everyone, for free, instead of keeping it internal.
The people behind it.

spacebits.es LinkedInWhat the tool does
Digital Metadata Remover reads the metadata embedded in an uploaded photo — EXIF, GPS, IPTC and, where present, XMP — explains it in plain language, and removes the detected fields from a copy of the file for download.
What we don't claim
We don't claim to remove "100%" of every possible metadata field in every format, and we don't claim metadata removal makes a photo anonymous — the visible content of the image is unaffected. See how metadata removal works.
